On another blog I post on, there was a rather heated discussion about freedom and, liberty. Gun ownership was tossed into the conversation.
My take on the second amendment is well known. The 2nd, is a personal right for all citizens to posess a firearm for their security. I also believe that the 2A was also another check and balance in order to keep the government UNDER the control of the people and to prevent the government from having a monoply of power.
One poster remarked that the citizens don't need an AK47 to hunt with. The second amendment...regardless of what the left has been led to believe...has nothing to do with hunting rights period.
It was also stated that a tyrany (or something of that nature) isn't likely to happen anytime soon.
Well, thats good news! Why not just wait until a police state is in place THEN go out and arm ourselves! While we're using that kind of logic, why not wait until AFTER your house burns down to buy a smoke detector?
It's foolhardy to think that you'll be able to do anything AFTER the fact because by the time you recognize whats happening, it's usually too late to do anything. The first thing EVERY dictator made certain of was that the means to resist were gone BEFORE the supression came out into the open.
One "tactician" stated that "a bunch of bubbas with AK'S are nothing more than an itch for the government to scratch".
Certainly if the full power and might of our military came down on some rednecks living in the woods someplace, it would be pretty easy. But, I also believe that if anything bad ever did happen, our military wouldn't be so easy to turn on their own citizens. And with some 500 million guns across America, it'll be more than a couple of bearded bubbas to contend with.
Other "bubbas" in history who gave a large standing army a run for their money...
The viet cong, The Warsaw ghetto inhabitants, The Finnish resistance, The French resistance, the dutch resistance, Al-quaida, the Iraqi insurgency, the Taliban, the Palestinians, the IRA and so on.
So, I'd be hard pressed to so easily dismiss what a group of determined people can accomplish when they're fighting repression and for their lives.
But, it was the easy dismissle that "It's not likely to happen here anytime soon" that made me laugh at the foolishness of such an "eyes wide shut" kind of statement. One only needs to look around at things that are happening right in front of their faces.
No, the government hasn't yet trampled the constitution but, it is plain to see that they've set it on the floor and only managed to crinkle the edges of it while trying to step around it. They get closer and closer in tiny increments to stepping right on it that by the time anyone sees the bootprint dead in the middle, it'll be too late to even speak out against it all.
One only needs to look at the pro-government media right now and the usefull idiots who watch it and absorb the oppinions of the state...and repeat it like a mindless parrot. The tea partiers are a prime example of the media telling the weak minded who to hate. People who have become fed up with the government's spending, power grabs, violations of our rights, corruption, waste, lies and the arrogance of elected SERVANTS who's loyalty is with party leaders instead of the voters who put them in office...those folks who are protesting for EVERYONE'S rights are slandered with labels such as racists, teabaggers, white supremists, idiots, bubbas, nazis and the latest being pro apartheid. I begin to question people's intellect when I can watch Olbermann or Maddow spout something ignorant last night and read people who are repeating it verbatim the next today in the blogosphere. Hmmm, state sanctioned hate...I can't think of ANY other countries where a controlled media pulled that one off before!
But, I guess if your favored medium for information keeps assuring you that all is well, then theres no reason whatsoever to look elsewhere for information because all the facts you want to believe have already been absorbed, processed and, beyond questioning.
